Got Power Struggles?May 05, 2021
To be clear, today's possibility is not intended to judge any parent for doing their best to raise a happy, healthy child.
Today's #WhatIfWednesday brainstorm was inspired by a heartfelt request for parenting ideas... from a mom who was doing her best, but not having the effect she was hoping for:
"What is the appropriate punishment," she asked, "for kids who are breaking the rules?"
The comments online were fascinating, and stirred up my own inquiries on parental power, and what we learned early in life about who has power (and who does not).
And so, with absolute reverence and compassion for the journey that is "parenting," I open the door to expanding possibilities for teaching the next generation about the greatest power of all: The Power of Love.
- What if the agony and discomfort we feel when "punishing" a child is an indicator that there is another way to respond?
- What if every interaction we have with our children is based on the presupposition that they are good, well-meaning kids who are doing the best they can to navigate the world they have inherited?
- What if parenting offers us the ultimate opportunity to distinguish between the power of authority and the power of Love?
I am not a parenting expert, nor would I say that I know how to transform the generations of embedded beliefs and stereotypes that have oppressed so many people in so many ways.
What I do know is that I love my kid to the moon and back. And I believe in my heart that LOVE is the only thing that has the power to break old, embedded paradigms and create real, transformational change.
Today, I invite us to use the power of Love to co-create new possibilities for supporting, empowering and uplifting the next generation.
